Review: Machine Learning vs Human Learning

Published on 25 Mar, 2025 by James G.

Earlier this month we joined St John’s Innovation Centre for an insightful talk on the future of AI: Machine Learning vs. Human Learning - What have we learned? Curb App Co-Founder Dr David McLaughlan talked about the opportunities and challenges AI presents in behavioural health. Senior Innovation & Growth Specialist Reuben Isbitsky then chaired a panel with tech innovators to share their perspectives.

Panel discussions are a great way to get multiple perspectives, but they don’t offer the opportunity to go into much detail. I want to share some in-depth responses to my favourite questions below:

What inspires you most with your AI development?

AI development excites us most because of its ability to solve real-world problems and exceed customer expectations. As our Director, James Green, puts it, AI has a “magical” quality—it can deliver transformative results that feel almost beyond what was imagined. The true reward comes from the tangible impact we see in our clients’ operations, where AI streamlines processes and drives measurable success. Seeing that transformation first hand is what keeps us inspired.

AI forecasts swing between utopian and dystopian - what’s your view?

AI sits somewhere between utopian and dystopian—it has the power to drive incredible breakthroughs, but also poses significant risks. Take, for example, the case of Imperial College London, where researchers spent years studying why certain superbugs resist antibiotics. Google’s AI “co-scientist” solved the problem in just 48 hours, prompting the scientist to double-check that it hadn’t accessed his prior research. This kind of progress is astonishing.

On the other end of the spectrum, anyone who has experienced the unpredictability of a self-driving car knows AI’s flaws can be alarming. Like any technology, AI can be used for good or misused with harmful consequences. To ensure it benefits society, we must prioritise ethical considerations, align AI with human values, and enforce strong governance, transparency, and fairness—no easy task in an increasingly globalised world.

How do you stay up to date with developments in AI?

Keeping up with AI’s rapid advancements is a challenge, but at GC, it’s our core mission to stay ahead so we can guide others. Our strong partnership with AWS provides continuous updates, resources, and training to help us stay informed.

Specialisation is becoming essential as AI expands—no one can know everything. However, business fundamentals remain unchanged: solving real problems, delivering clear objectives, and proving ROI. Like any technology, AI is gradually becoming more accessible, allowing more people to leverage its power in ways that were previously out of reach. We focus on staying at the forefront, helping businesses navigate this evolving landscape, and ensuring AI delivers real, measurable value.

AI is evolving at an unprecedented pace, bringing both incredible opportunities and significant challenges. By staying informed, prioritising ethics, and focusing on real-world impact, we can harness AI’s potential for good. The key is responsible development—aligning innovation with human values to drive meaningful progress.
