THE CUSTOMER
Fluidic Analytics was formed in 2013 as a spin-out from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Frustrated by the lack of suitable tools for protein characterisation, a group of scientists decided to invent their own.
THE BRIEF
Fluidic Analytics is developing a machine for laboratory-based experiments, which will simplify certain processes. The machine required a prototype user interface which could be used for user testing to help shape the final interface.
THE REQUIREMENTS
1. A prototype user interface for a scientific machine. The following knowledge and experience was essential: –
- Experience of designing user interfaces
- Android application knowledge
- An understanding and experience of working with hardware
- An understanding of the scientific processes behind the machine
2. Experience of working within a start-up
- Understanding the short timescales for producing prototype interface
- Appreciating the pressures a start-up faces for demonstrations to investors/future customers
“Green Custard is the perfect place to go for any project involving the development and implementation of innovative software concepts. Their attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality products is exceptional."

CEO, Fluidic Analytics
THE SOLUTION
Having a start-up background ourselves, we always enjoy working with start-ups to help them achieve their goals. Fluidic Analytics were excellent to work with as they provided a clear insight into what their product goals were and how the scientific machine works.
The success of the user interface design depended upon capturing all of the requirements related to the machine and the scientific technical aspects of the experiment the machine would replicate.
The end result is that Fluidic Analytics have achieved their interim goal of having a demonstration model of the machine that they can show to customers. We are now working with them to develop a production version of the software.
“The process was very interactive, we used the valuable feedback from user testing to shape the final interface. We are very proud of the result of this project, it is a good feeling to help a start-up realise their goals.” – Jonathan Custance, Director, Green Custard
